Susan and I waved for her father to join us. Oh thank you so much Julian! She beamed with and big smile. Hello David isn’t it? I said standing up to shake his hand this Is Kathleen. Yes Julian, David, pleased to meet you Kathleen Susan has spoken very highly of you as a person and teacher he said reaching out for her hand. Nice to meet you David. Smiled Kathleen. Sorry sir but we’re involved in some deep subject matters here that will require a little explanation.
So Susan you’re wanting to know what Miss Kathleen and I are doing together but first let’s address the spring dance. Oh you don’t have to Julian. No I said, I owe you and Mr Steiger an explanation as a man.
I’m really sorry about not following up with you after the dance but you see Susan I don’t know or I didn’t know what I had to offer you. I remember seeing you once in town somewhere I can’t recall what store or what I was even doing but I saw you. We were younger and I remember seeing this dark complected girl with dark eyes and long dark hair. We never spoke and I don’t think she ever even saw me but I saw her. That image has stayed in my head. I couldn’t believe I didn’t talk to you or try to find out who you were. Then this past spring a girl friend of mine came up to me and said that you wanted time to take to the spring dance. Even then I never put it together that that was you I saw those years ago in the store. Everything seemed to go away in the restaurant as I told the story. Kathleen looked like she wanted to get emotional and David just listened. Another drink ma’am he asked as Kathleen had finished hers. Why yes please David thank you! She smiled.
But Susan we come from different places, different backgrounds. I’m not popular, not an athlete. Y’all are a townie, y’all are affluent, I’m poor, we run in different circles what can I offer you? What do I have to offer a girl like you? You can be with me she said crying. Kathleen broke down as well. David didn’t know what to do. Just then Erica came with our food. Uhh ma’am could y’all please fetch Mr Steiger and his daughter Susan’s food orders over here? We seem to have gotten into a little predicament here I reckon. Oh and Mr Steiger would like to order more drinks for he and Miss Kathleen. Uhh, yes, yes, umm I’ll take a double bourbon on the rocks and Miss Kathleen? Where was I? But Susan back to us. Im so appreciative that yall asked me to the dance. I didn’t deserve it.
I’m still healing I’ve had a lot of trauma to my respiratory, central nervous, and neurological systems. I’ll be months recovering. I had a fractured skull, bruised lungs, broken ribs, dislocated shoulder, broken wrist, compound fractured femur, fractured hip, ruptured spleen and internal bleeding.
With schooling and therapy my days are full plus I live over here right now I don’t know how we could see each other. I’m going to work part time at LA Fitness also. I’m sorry Susan I really am. Perhaps we could revisit the situation down the road girl. It’s not that didn’t find you attractive girl because you so are it was my own insecurities with myself and my life and now this setback I just need time to set my feet on a path, heal and figure out my life.
As for me and Miss Kathleen my gram and Kathleen’s mother know each other because they belong to the same American War Mothers organization of the United Methodist church in town. They’ve been on trips together to DC to see the Lincoln Memorial, Arlington, Washington Monument, Vietnam Veterans Memorial and are active in it at the church level. They’re friends and when Miss Bearis heard about what happened she offered assistance. Kathleen set up my home schooling through Mr Marciano. And she sees to it I get to my therapy sessions because I’m not old enough to drive and to take some of the pressure off my grams and mother. Her and her mother have been great. Really great to me. I don’t know where I d be without them.
But you could come stay with us Julian, couldn’t he dad, please? Susan pleaded. I can’t ask for that Susan. You’re not I want it! Susan sobbed. Susan had lost her mother some time before we met. I don’t even know that story. I don’t know what she needed from me but I could see her father had his hands full with trying to fill this girls trauma from that. I felt so bad because that part of the equation never entered my mind until now. But what could I do?
That sounds great Susan let’s see how things go but ultimately that’s your father’s decision.

No. In light of the current circumstances that definitely would be me I chipped drawing a round of laughter from the table. Susan just kept looking at me while David was unsuspectingly trying to charm my girl.
Married? Boyfriend? Never married, fresh out of a relationship said Kathleen. It happens he said looking at Susan I lost my wife recently. Sorry for your loss we said. I can see why Susan thinks so much of you Julian. Honestly sir we barely know each other. I shows son. I may be young and a bit precocious Mr Steiger but I’ve always been able to sense a virtuous woman with a genuine heart. That’s what I’ve always looked for in my woman. I’m sure she got all those qualities from her mama. I truly wish I could have met her. Thank you Julian for saying that. Our shots arrived just then.
