Excellent Julio! She said. I’m going to get the apartment ready this week is there anything special you would like me to have there? Nah baby just havin y’all there be will plenty special enough. Aww you’re so sweet. I won’t be able to stay any longer this week but I’ll pick you up when they’re satisfied with your progress enough to discharge you. I’ll be keeping up with it on my end. I know you will, I laughed in pain!
My mother came once more on Wednesday because everyone was so far away they couldn’t get away and gram didn’t like the travel. I told her about how I was going to handle things her and gram didn’t have to worry about a thing, that I had friends who were going to take care of me. My days were filled with tests and visits from different teams of medical personnel. My progress was going better than expected than when I was admitted. Well Mr Molina you’re coming along quite well, Dr Encinas said Thursday morning looking at my bedside chart. I believe we can let you go home maybe in a couple days but you have to understand even though you’re young and resilient you’ve suffered much trauma to your respiratory, endocrine, and central nervous systems. You’ll need to be extra careful to not overextend yourself during this healing process. Just because we’re sending you home doesn’t mean you can be reckless about recovery. We’ve scheduled you for rehab and therapy sessions in your home location.
Yessir I have someone who is going monitor me strictly whether I like it or not. I smiled. Oh yes! Would that be the fair haired young lady I’ve seen visiting you in here? Yessir. Yes, she’s spoken to me at length about your condition he said, she sought me out actually and everything was scheduled through her. Very intriguing and intelligent young woman who seems very concerned with your well being. Yeah I know, I said. Thank you Dr. I said shaking his hand. Take care young man. I’ll do my best sir.
My first attempt at getting out of bed Friday was painful to say the least. My hip hurt like hell just sitting up then came trying to get up on my good leg with crutches under my armpits putting down pressure on them with broken ribs. It took two orderlies and a nurse to help me. Once I was up though I managed to take a few hops fairly stable although my brow was sweating from trying to hide the pain woo wee! Friday and Saturday were trips out the room down the hall to a therapy room. I got plenty of attention from the young nurses seeing to my therapy asking about my accident. I couldn’t really tell them much only what I remembered before going over the high wall. They were amazed at my survival.
My sessions ended with a wheelchair ride back to my room.
I didn’t sleep much Saturday night in anticipation of Kathleen’s arrival to get me out of there. Sunday I was going through processing when she came down the ward moving like the goddess that she is getting greetings and smiles from everyone she passed.
She’d gotten her hair cut in Bardot style bangs under a red and black checkered French beret, bun on top with a ribbon hair curl down along each cheek, large gold hoop earrings, grey turtleneck sweater under a dark wool Alpine Swiss Bella belted button up jacket, grey distressed jeans with black Nine West platform boots, and a black Saint Laurent envelope chain wallet. Her makeup accentuated her hazel eyes and hollow cheeks. Love the new doo. You’re absolutely stunning! I said. She smiled big and blushed, I wanted to look good for you Julio, to celebrate your homecoming! Mission accomplished! I gushed. They had me in a wheelchair at the desk with my crutches on my lap. Kathleen really stirred me up with her presentation, I said, I’m walking out of here, to my attendees. Oh no Mr Molina we don’t recommend that we’ll wheel you to your ride and help you in. No, I said, I’m walking out of here with more dignity than I came in with and enough dignity to try to match the presentation Miss Kathleen has brought to this occasion. I owe her that. You sure Julio, she asked. Yes ma’am! I said. Well if you insist Mr Molina we’ll help you up, they said. No! I got this, I said and I stood up by myself for the first time since the accident. Well look at that Kathleen said smiling. You don’t have much In the way of belongings Mr Molina we had to cut your clothes from your body to hasten the process of evaluating your condition and injuries. Your wallet is all we have to give you the attendant said handing it to me. It was signed in.
I got some belongings from your family Kathleen said, in the meantime until you settle into your new accommodations Julio. I got into the passenger seat of Kathleen’s SUV, she shut the door and came round to the driver side. As she sat down I just looked at her. What? She said wide eyed. Y’all are beautiful and amazing Kathleen, I said. She just smiled.
I’ve got you all set up Julian. I got us some healthy choice frozen dinners for now until we figure out what each other likes. I can cook girl I’ve watched my grams since I was little. I’ll cook for you. Anything y’all want. Aww babe you’re so sweet she said, you don’t have to do that. I’ll take care of y’all as well, make sure y’all eat well after a long day. Are there laundry facilities? Yes Julian in the apartment. I’ll do laundry for us too. Now remember you can’t be overextending yourself, she said. I won’t but I don’t want to be a leach. You’re not a leach Julian this is me doing what I want to do. Yes ma’am I said. You’re so fucking gorgeous right now UHHH! Yes well stop trying to charm my panties off young man you’ve got healing to do before we can play. I don’t know if can take it girl! Try! She said, because I’ve been going without since you walked out of my life. I’m so sorry babe. That was the hardest thing I’ve ever done was walk out that door that night. It wasn’t goodbye. What was it then Julio? She asked looking right at me. It was…I hesitated….not knowing the answer on how to save an impossible yet beautiful relationship. I am young. I am inexperienced along those lines but I know what I want. I know it feels so right it scares me. But I also know what could happen to y’all if the wrong people get involved. That would be worse for me than to lose you….I think. I don’t know. I don’t want to think along those lines though.
Well, she said, look at where we are right now. I know! It’s flippin crazy right Kathleen? I reckon we just move like everything is gonna work out because I reckon it is. I reckon so Julian, she quipped, and we both lost it! Owww! Oh. man if y’all only knew the pain, I said as I scrunched over holding my midsection. That’s straight outta Josey Wales!
