What panties should I wear?

18 year old female, just left school, I am going on my 6th year holiday with lots of other girls from my school, they all seem to be more street wise than me, guess it's down to having my parents buy all my clothes and whatever else I want. I don't want to go on holiday and look like a total sap, I want serious suggestions from females of all ages about what I should pack, for day time clothes and evening and night time clothes? My mum has suggested plain white knickers that cover everything, however all my friends have bright coloured and skimpier knickers than the ones I wear?
