I had to get married in 1965
Back then, it was a scandal to be pregnant without a husband. I confessed to my parents I was pregnant, and he confessed to his parents what happened.
A meeting of us and all four parents happened. It was decided that the solution to our problem was to get married. Back then, this was common. We planned a wedding to take place in a month.
We were both 19, so young. I never finished college. He went back years later, because he had to go to work to support me and the new baby.
We grew apart and divorced eventually. We had three daughters.
Sometimes our daughters ask me why we divorced. My ex was a good dad, he really was, and my kids benefitted. He neglected me as a woman, as his wife, and I became unhappy.
In '64 I was 13 and I became pregnant by my 17 year old boy cousin after a year of fooling around with him. It was like an atomic bomb going off within my family.
I had no other choice but to move in with my extended family out in the Midwest and give the baby up for adoption. My cousin was ushered into the armed forces as soon as he was 18. He was killed in Viet Nam '68.
When I was twenty, I entered a closeted lesbian relationship and eventually we moved to Alaska. We are still up here.
My wife got pregnant when she was 17 years old by a black boy but she didn't know who the father was because she had gone to a house party and more than one guy had sex with her that night. I knew her all of my life and we were good friends and I offered to marry her and we are still married today.
Thankfully shotgun weddings seldom happen nowadays.
Getting married because a girl is pregnant is a poor solution to the problem.
Back when it was a scandal, to get knocked up and not married, it made sense to people.
