I could tell from the look on my dad's face that he was far from pleased when Mario walked into our garden from the house next door carrying a bottle of wine. Apparently my mum had met him a couple of days before in the street outside our house and he had helped her bring in the shopping during a heavy downpour of rain. He obviously introduced himself and explained that he was renting one of the flats in the house next to ours and this led to my mum inviting him to our BBQ, but she had failed to mention it to dad. Anyway, after the BBQ my dad expressed his displeasure about Mario turning up despite the fact that my mum thought Mario was very nice as, apparently, did many of our friends. Needless to say Mario was the only black person at the BBQ, and it was obvious that my dad made no effort to talk to him. I didn't talk to Mario either but it was obvious to me that he was attracted to me as I was to him and somehow I plucked up the courage to slip him a note as he was leaving. I invited him to come for coffee the next morning explaining that my parent's would be out all day. I wasn't sure if he would come but he did. I suppose I should say that unbeknown to my parents I had had several black boyfriends, but they were all my own age. Mario is 10 years older and clearly very experienced, which is exactly what I wanted before going to university the following week.
