They know i had a babysitter when older
I sometimes see people around or on social media who know that i got in trouble in my senior year for shoplifting and had a babysitter sometimes when I was grounded by my Dad for 2 months. They hired a neighbor to babysit who was in my class, kind of a friend a little older then me (but my parents treated him like an adult compared to me,) more mature socially (wouldn't hang out with a geek like me) to babysit if they went out. He was mostly ok to me but could supervise everything i did, knew all my rules and could impose discipline or tell my dad if i broke rules when he was babysitting. Alot of people knew mostly because my little sister told stories. Even after 15 years way too embarrassing to wonder if they still think about it when they see me.
Why would you be embarrassed about something that essentially your father did? If I saw someone from then I would say to them, "Can you believe my overly protective crazy father hired me a BABYSITTER for 2 months just because I stole a [item that you stole... I do not know what it is]? He may as well have handed my little sister written permission to torment me!"
Everyone's parents did some whacked out shit to them at some point, who is perfect? I was not allowed to wear jeans, I had to wear proper trousers and dress shoes to public school. Of course I was made fun of. Now I just have a funny story about begging to wear jeans and running shoes when I was a kid. What difference does it make today?
Sounds to me like it may have been more of a substitute dad/mentor type thing. Dad wanted his geek son to "man up", and paid someone to, basically, be your friend, hoping you'd pick up a few things. Probably doesn't make it less embarrasing, but, maybe change your view on it a little. This seems like a paid friend to help geek kid be more mature.
