Pre-engagement separation

My wife and I were childhood classmates since kindergarten. We started hanging out together in junior high, but just as friends. We had our first date our junior year for homecoming when she broke up with the boyfriend she had at the time, and I filled in as a last-minute backup so she wouldn’t have to go alone. It was my first real date, and she kissed me when I dropped her off at home. We were not really a thing for over a year as she still dated other guys, but I was head over heals in love with her. Although I had a few other dates, I have never really wanted any other girl but her.

We really didn’t start dating seriously until the semester before graduation. We both lived with our parents while I went through trade school and started working. I saved up some money, bought an old farmhouse and started fixing it up. My intention was to have her move in and get married. She agreed and we gave each other our virginity to celebrate. But the house needed a lot of work and, although I was willing to live in a house under construction, it would be about a year before it was ready for her to move in. I proposed and she initially accepted, but her mother didn’t like me that much. Her mother wanted her daughter to marry someone who had gone to college and would provide a better life for her. Her mother convinced her daughter that she should date a few more guys before we got engaged.

Reluctantly, we postponed our formal engagement and agreed to allow each other to date until the house was done. It was supposed only be for six months. We live in a small town, so, to make the ruse work, we had to tell everyone that we were not an item anymore. We would still talk almost daily, but in secret. I had to go from lover to wingman status. That was hard because I had to act like her confidant as she relayed details of what she was doing, both romantically and sexually with the other guys. All while being supportive and not openly revealing any feelings of jealousy. Initially she agreed that she would not go past third base, but that promise didn’t last, and she had intercourse with three other guys.

Of course, at first, it really hurt to hear her recall her sexual exploits with these other guys. Often she would excitedly call me when she got home from a date and tell me how much fun it was to have intercourse with this guy and how many orgasms she had. But, we had been best friends since we were kids, and she trusted me with her feelings, so I never let on that anything she did bothered me. It actually took nine months before I had our home ready. We openly reconnected and announced our engagement at the housewarming party.
