We are avid hikers and do a lot of hiking in our area but wanted a more exotic adventure. We decided to do the Mt. Everest Base Camp trek a few months ago. No, we did not climb the mountain up high (that's stupid), but getting to base camp was high enough (5364 meters). We're hikers, not mountaineers. We still had to get in shape and prepare well in advance. It was a good trek to get there and it was a steady rise, walking 7km-9km per day. We had a couple of days devoted solely to acclimating to the high elevation.
To prevent altitude sickness, we took Diamox and my husband also took Viagra, which some studies have shown helps with atrial pressure.
We trekked with a small group of six and stayed at the tea houses along the way. It was rustic and fun. When we'd hike in the mornings we were a loose group; some were a little ahead, some were behind. We'd take breaks on occasion.
