Fat People Disgust Me
Recently I was on vacation with my family in Florida. During that trip we made the traditional stops at Universal, Disney and Sea World. In every case and every location I was shocked to see hundreds of obese or super obese people most of who were most likely under 35 years of age. Many were obviously in their teens or early 20s and so obese that they could only have gotten that way by being over fed from a very early age. The worse offenders seemed to be the girls. Some were so fat that they needed electric scooters to get around.. All of them looked horribly uncomfortable in the heat but it didn't seem to stop them from eating all manner of junk food and drinking gallons of sugary soda and juice. They also wore the most disgusting and gut wrenching outfits imaginable. Yards of fabric streched tightly over expanses of bloated jiggling flesh that could not even be remotely contained. Many of you would probably have found it amusing but to me, it was vomit inducing. How has this happened and who is to blame. I have been happily married for almost 20 years to a wonderful, slim, beautiful wife and we have 3 children ages 14, 10, and 7, none of which are even slightly overweight. As parent and a concerned citizen, I find this explosion of fat monsters abhorrent and I would like to say that I feel sorry for these obese people but I can't help but think that they have done this to themselves on purpose. No one gets to be 3, 4 or 5 hundred pounds by accident. It's willful. It's unrestrained gluttony. It's ignorance. It's turning a blind eye to the obvious and denying the danger to your own self or that of your family member. Obesity kills more people than cancer, cars and guns and as a nation, it's long past time that we do something about it besides "thoughts and prayers" or the wringing of hands. I would really like to see some objective and constructive thoughts on this.

Obesity is obesity. A fact of life. And your disgust is an emotion inside YOUR head. I am a slim person (BMI +-20). I am involved in arts and I too, for my individual aesthetic dogmas, dislike fat bodies. Now I can see my dislike and I find it pretty normal - given my own, muscular, but very slim, image. We tend to like people who are alike us, and dislike people who are very different from us. I also dislike people who are rude, all politicians, and many business people. Disgust? sounds like a very strong reaction to me. If one day you decide you want to go out of your comfort zone, then you could make friends with someone who is very obese. This should be very easy given how many people are. Perhaps this friendship could help you see fat people in a slightly different light. Think of it. Some things in our lives are our choices. So you can choose too which way to go from the point you are at. VBR

Obesity is a major problem globally but it's worse in the US. Many of the people are so fat by the time they hit adulthood that they are already pre-diabetic, have heart disease, high cholesterol, and mobility problems. They gobble down huge amounts of fast food and sugary drinks and they refuse to get the proper amount of physical activity. This leads to an extremely unhealthy population... TV shows like "My 600 life" or "My Fat Fabulous Life" glorify fatness and this body positivity garbage only encourages this horrible situation.
